When librarians attack!

We often joke that IFIS librarian as an orangutang in reference of the Discworld series and that you shouldn't annoy them or return your books late, cos they are liable to rip your arms off. Except they never actually (except maybe winterdreamer) have lived up to that claim...until now. I've never seen an enraged librarian up close before and I'm glad that her wrath isn't directed at me. I fully expect to read on the news about a bloodbath massacre at the SU tonight.

The reason for this act of uberviolence? Well for the past 3 years we've pestered the SU to find a new home for the library cos it's current home doesn't want it any more. Well they've given us 'til Monday to move and we know full well that the SU are going to continue being crap and won't be able to help. And when we move them off campus (assuming we can find some way of moving the cupboards too) they'll tell us off cos we have to keep them on campus somewhere.

On the plus side, it will mean we'll end up with the library being in just one location and our librarian might actually have a chance to start on the project to re-order the library so it's easier to find stuff.

ION I had this really weird dream where I appeared to be working in what I think was some kind of dating/matchmaking agency. Except I never actually appeared to do any work and didn't see anyone else doing anything. The only bit of activity that did happen was trying to stop some other rival group sending out this hovering ball things that were spitting out...things. I hate it when dreams are vague and meaningless.

Ahhh, some things never change! The SU are still being poo about the library!

They're crap in regards to everything.

Ho ho ho! NEVER enrage a librarian!

I think we have been lucky (until now) to have very mild mannered librarians who probably couldn't get enraged even if we stole all their bananas and called them a monkey.

Um, isn't it obvious?

If they bleat about it having to be on campus somewhere, give them an inventory and a key and tell them to deal with it. They can let you know when they have found somewhere, which they should have done at some point over the past 3 years.

If the college or whoever complains, you can then point at the SU and say it's their responsibility.

As soon as it becomes *their* problem, it'll be solved pretty quick.

Right?

Wrong. The college has given us until Monday to move the library. What do you think happens if we don't meet this deadline? That the college will complain some more and give us another deadline? Unlikely - they've been complaining now for 3 years (apparently). What is more likely to happen is that the cupboards and their contents will end up in a skip. Or worse, they'll pry open and wreck the cupboards to empty them first, thus depriving us of having any storage even if we could rescue the books.

The SU is unlikely to find anywhere before the deadline and since letting the college dump them into a skip is a nice and simple solution to the problem for them, they'll probably be happy to go for that plan. After all, it's not like the library makes them any money. The only reason they "insist" the books are on campus, is that means they're covered by their insurance.

I imagine the committee would rather move the books off campus and at least ensure we have a library for future members than run the risk of the whole lot ending up in a skip.
